Many schools are making an effort to create a set of learning outcomes for their orientation programs.  These learning outcomes may focus on topics anywhere from campus culture to icebreakers.  Please post any learning outcomes that you have used in your own orientation programs so that we can share our ideas.

Here is an example of some learning outcomes that have been created by an institution to assist with their Orientatioin Leader Training.

Orientation Leader Training

Icebreakers/Team Building
·         Leaders will establish and build solid relationships with members of the orientation team.
·         Leaders will build communication skills necessary to work well as a part of the orientation team.

Student Development Theory
·         Leaders will learn and gain background knowledge of basic student development theory.
·         Leaders will understand how student development theory applies to first-year students.

Campus Tours
·         Leaders will be able to identify all physical structures on campus.
·         Leaders will have knowledge of all functions taking place within each building.

Academic Training
·         Leaders will have complete knowledge of all academic program requirements.
·         Leaders will have a relationship with all academic department heads and deans.

Expectations
·         Leaders will create and sign their own set of expectations that they will follow during their employment as orientation leaders.
·         Leaders will have a complete understanding of the student code of conduct and how it applies to them.

Does anyone have examples of outcomes in regards to what the orientation staff will gain from the experience as a whole?

We have a few that we use in our recruitment for staff leaders.  Hope this helps with what you are looking for.

-Opportunity to grow as an individual as well as a team member.
-Become a role model for others.
-Utilize creativity and imagination
-Become aware of one's own strengths and abilities.

According to the NODA Databank, 53.42% of colleges/universities that completed the Round on Assessment, have articulated learning outcomes for students who attend orientation. And 41.03% of responding colleges and universities have articulated learning outcomes for leaders/student staff. For more info on the NODA Databank, visit:
