AIR is “a professional association of more than 4,000 institutional researchers, planners and decision-makers from more than 1,500 higher education institutions around the world.” It “supports members in their efforts to continuously improve the practice of institutional research for postsecondary planning, management and operations, and further develops and promotes the institutional research profession.” AIR provides several opportunities for professional development to its members throughout the year, including its Annual Forum and Assessment Institute. As one of the first organizations to emphasize the use of assessment to increase the effectiveness of higher education, AIR offers programs and resources to assist its members in their assessment endeavors.

Membership is available yearly to individuals, graduate students, and organizations, which have an interest in or are actively engaged in institutional research.

Assessment
AIR believes that assessment is a crucial part of institutional research so much that it offers an annual Assessment Institute for Institutional Research Practitioners. This Institute offers AIR members the opportunity “to acquire knowledge about the assessment field and to expand their knowledge and skills regarding the assessment needs within their respective institutions.” It also provides a platform for networking and collaboration among its members. AIR also includes many sessions at its Annual Forum on assessment. Other assessment resources are also available through AIR.
